However, there are a few sneaky words w<strong>i<\/strong>th less obv<strong>i<\/strong>ous ways of spell<strong>i<\/strong>ng that very same sound. So let&#8217;s have a look at how to pronounce <strong>i<\/strong>n b<strong>uil<\/strong>d b<strong>u<\/strong>sy.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>THE \u2013AGE OF REASON<\/h2>\n<p>You may not think it\u00a0obv<strong>i<\/strong>ous that the letter \u2018a\u2019 should be prounounced \/\u026a\/ but a certain combination of letters after the \u2018a\u2019 g<strong>i<\/strong>ves us th<strong>i<\/strong>s result. Take \u2018volt<strong>a<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/v\u0252lt\u026ad\u0292\/, \u2018garb<strong>a<\/strong>ge\u2019\/ga:b\u026ad\u0292\/, \u2018sp<strong>i<\/strong>llage\u2019\/sp\u026al\u026ad\u0292\/ \u2018mile<strong>a<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/ma\u026al\u026ad\u0292\/ bagg<strong>a<\/strong>ge \/bag\u026ad\u0292\/, and the pattern becomes clear. The \u2018ge\u2019 after the \u2018a\u2019 seems to work <strong>i<\/strong>ts own kind of mag<strong>i<\/strong>c turn<strong>i<\/strong>ng that \u2018a\u2019 <strong>i<\/strong>nto \/\u026a\/.<\/p>\n<p>Then we have \u2018marr<strong>ia<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/m\u00e6r\u026ad\u0292\/, carr<strong>ia<\/strong>ge \/k\u00e6b\u026ad\u0292\/, whereby the letter \u2018i\u2019 d<strong>i<\/strong>sappears and the \u2018ge\u2019 transforms the \u2018a\u2019 <strong>i<\/strong>nto \/\u026a\/. Or <strong>i<\/strong>s <strong>i<\/strong>t that the \u2018i\u2019 remains the \/\u026a\/ <strong>i<\/strong>t was born to be and the \u2018ge\u2019 th<strong>i<\/strong>s time erases the \u2018a\u2019? Whatever happens, both \u2018age\u2019 and \u2018iage\u2019 in these examples result in \/\u026ad\u0292\/. We can see this <strong>i<\/strong>n words w<strong>i<\/strong>th two syllables but \u2018age\u2019 and \u2018cage\u2019 w<strong>i<\/strong>th one syllable do not follow th<strong>i<\/strong>s pattern.<\/p>\n<h2>PAST SIMPLE \u2013ed<\/h2>\n<p>Pronunciation of the past s<strong>i<\/strong>mple deserves <strong>i<\/strong>ts own lesson, which <a href=\"http:\/\/englishteacherjames.com\">I have taught a lot as an English pronunciation teacher<\/a>, so I won\u2019t go <strong>i<\/strong>nto too much detail here. You can pronounce\u00a0\u2018ed\u2019 in past s<strong>i<\/strong>mple words <strong>i<\/strong>n three ways: \/d\/, \/t\/ and \/\u026ad\/ and today you only need to concern yourself w<strong>i<\/strong>th \/\u026ad\/. Words\u00a0like start<strong>e<\/strong>d, test<strong>e<\/strong>d, dat<strong>e<\/strong>d, end<strong>e<\/strong>d, decid<strong>e<\/strong>d and recommend<strong>e<\/strong>d all\u00a0have a \/t\/ or \/d\/ sound before the \u2018ed\u2019. We pronounce the \u2018ed\u2019 \/\u026ad\/: \/sta:t\u026ad\/ \/test\u026ad\/ \/de\u026at\u026ad\/ \/end\u026ad\/ \/d\u0259sa\u026ad\u026ad\/ \/rek\u0259mend\u026ad\/. Although these words also have a \u2018t\u2019 or \u2018d\u2019 <strong>i<\/strong>n <strong>E<\/strong>ngl<strong>i<\/strong>sh pronunciation we are talk<strong>i<\/strong>ng about the sound rather than the spell<strong>i<\/strong>ng, even though they amount to the same th<strong>i<\/strong>ng <strong>i<\/strong>n th<strong>i<\/strong>s <strong>i<\/strong>nstance.<\/p>\n<h2>OTHER EXCEPTIONS<\/h2>\n<p>You can treat the other kinds of spell<strong>i<\/strong>ng\u00a0on the <strong>i<\/strong>nfograph<strong>i<\/strong>c as exceptions too. You have\u00a0no reason to expect to pronounce \u2018b<strong>e<\/strong>g<strong>i<\/strong>n\u2019 \/b\u026ag\u026an\/ or to pronounce\u00a0&#8216;w<strong>o<\/strong>m<strong>e<\/strong>n&#8217; \/w\u026am\u026an\/ especially when the s<strong>i<\/strong>ngular form <strong>i<\/strong>s woman \/w\u028am\u0259n\/. Maybe you don&#8217;t often talk about &#8216;b<strong>i<\/strong>sc<strong>ui<\/strong>ts&#8217; \/b\u026ask\u026ats\/ but you need to know about &#8216;b<strong>ui<\/strong>lding&#8217; \/b\u026aldn\u026a\u014b\/, along with &#8216;b<strong>u<\/strong>siness&#8217; \/b\u026azn\u026as\/ and \u00a0m<strong>i<\/strong>n<strong>u<\/strong>te&#8217; \/m\u026an\u026at\/.<\/p>\n<p>And don\u2019t forget: we pronounce\u00a0\u2018e\u2019 <strong>i<\/strong>n <strong>E<\/strong>ngland and <strong>E<\/strong>ngl<strong>i<\/strong>sh w<strong>i<\/strong>th \/\u026a\/! \/\u026a\u014bgl\u0259nd\/ and \/\u026a\u014bgl\u026a\u0283\/.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I<\/strong>n conclusion, don\u2019t worry about spell<strong>i<\/strong>ng the \/\u026a\/ sound. <strong>I<\/strong>t <strong>i<\/strong>s fairly consistent so you can usually rely on the letter \u2018i\u2019 to do the job <strong>i<\/strong>t was designed for. Just be aware of the exceptions and you\u2019ll be fine, as exceptions can be memorized.<\/p>\n<p>Have a look at the <strong>i<\/strong>nfograph<strong>i<\/strong>c below and learn these ways of spell<strong>i<\/strong>ng the \/\u026a\/ sound.
