HOW TO PRONOUNCE IN BUILD BUSY<\/h1>\n

Usually we have one clear way of spelli<\/strong>ng the \/\u026a\/ sound i<\/strong>n the E<\/strong>ngli<\/strong>sh langua<\/strong>ge, and that\u2019s wi<\/strong>th the letter \u2018i\u2019. However, there are a few sneaky words wi<\/strong>th less obvi<\/strong>ous ways of spelli<\/strong>ng that very same sound. So let’s have a look at how to pronounce i<\/strong>n buil<\/strong>d bu<\/strong>sy.

THE \u2013AGE OF REASON<\/h2>\n

You may not think it\u00a0obvi<\/strong>ous that the letter \u2018a\u2019 should be prounounced \/\u026a\/ but a certain combination of letters after the \u2018a\u2019 gi<\/strong>ves us thi<\/strong>s result. Take \u2018volta<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/v\u0252lt\u026ad\u0292\/, \u2018garba<\/strong>ge\u2019\/ga:b\u026ad\u0292\/, \u2018spi<\/strong>llage\u2019\/sp\u026al\u026ad\u0292\/ \u2018milea<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/ma\u026al\u026ad\u0292\/ bagga<\/strong>ge \/bag\u026ad\u0292\/, and the pattern becomes clear. The \u2018ge\u2019 after the \u2018a\u2019 seems to work i<\/strong>ts own kind of magi<\/strong>c turni<\/strong>ng that \u2018a\u2019 i<\/strong>nto \/\u026a\/.<\/p>\n

Then we have \u2018marria<\/strong>ge\u2019 \/m\u00e6r\u026ad\u0292\/, carria<\/strong>ge \/k\u00e6b\u026ad\u0292\/, whereby the letter \u2018i\u2019 di<\/strong>sappears and the \u2018ge\u2019 transforms the \u2018a\u2019 i<\/strong>nto \/\u026a\/. Or i<\/strong>s i<\/strong>t that the \u2018i\u2019 remains the \/\u026a\/ i<\/strong>t was born to be and the \u2018ge\u2019 thi<\/strong>s time erases the \u2018a\u2019? Whatever happens, both \u2018age\u2019 and \u2018iage\u2019 in these examples result in \/\u026ad\u0292\/. We can see this i<\/strong>n words wi<\/strong>th two syllables but \u2018age\u2019 and \u2018cage\u2019 wi<\/strong>th one syllable do not follow thi<\/strong>s pattern.<\/p>\n

PAST SIMPLE \u2013ed<\/h2>\n

Pronunciation of the past si<\/strong>mple deserves i<\/strong>ts own lesson, which I have taught a lot as an English pronunciation teacher<\/a>, so I won\u2019t go i<\/strong>nto too much detail here. You can pronounce\u00a0\u2018ed\u2019 in past si<\/strong>mple words i<\/strong>n three ways: \/d\/, \/t\/ and \/\u026ad\/ and today you only need to concern yourself wi<\/strong>th \/\u026ad\/. Words\u00a0like starte<\/strong>d, teste<\/strong>d, date<\/strong>d, ende<\/strong>d, decide<\/strong>d and recommende<\/strong>d all\u00a0have a \/t\/ or \/d\/ sound before the \u2018ed\u2019. We pronounce the \u2018ed\u2019 \/\u026ad\/: \/sta:t\u026ad\/ \/test\u026ad\/ \/de\u026at\u026ad\/ \/end\u026ad\/ \/d\u0259sa\u026ad\u026ad\/ \/rek\u0259mend\u026ad\/. Although these words also have a \u2018t\u2019 or \u2018d\u2019 i<\/strong>n E<\/strong>ngli<\/strong>sh pronunciation we are talki<\/strong>ng about the sound rather than the spelli<\/strong>ng, even though they amount to the same thi<\/strong>ng i<\/strong>n thi<\/strong>s i<\/strong>nstance.<\/p>\n

OTHER EXCEPTIONS<\/h2>\n

You can treat the other kinds of spelli<\/strong>ng\u00a0on the i<\/strong>nfographi<\/strong>c as exceptions too. You have\u00a0no reason to expect to pronounce \u2018be<\/strong>gi<\/strong>n\u2019 \/b\u026ag\u026an\/ or to pronounce\u00a0‘wo<\/strong>me<\/strong>n’ \/w\u026am\u026an\/ especially when the si<\/strong>ngular form i<\/strong>s woman \/w\u028am\u0259n\/. Maybe you don’t often talk about ‘bi<\/strong>scui<\/strong>ts’ \/b\u026ask\u026ats\/ but you need to know about ‘bui<\/strong>lding’ \/b\u026aldn\u026a\u014b\/, along with ‘bu<\/strong>siness’ \/b\u026azn\u026as\/ and \u00a0mi<\/strong>nu<\/strong>te’ \/m\u026an\u026at\/.<\/p>\n

And don\u2019t forget: we pronounce\u00a0\u2018e\u2019 i<\/strong>n E<\/strong>ngland and E<\/strong>ngli<\/strong>sh wi<\/strong>th \/\u026a\/! \/\u026a\u014bgl\u0259nd\/ and \/\u026a\u014bgl\u026a\u0283\/.<\/p>\n

I<\/strong>n conclusion, don\u2019t worry about spelli<\/strong>ng the \/\u026a\/ sound. I<\/strong>t i<\/strong>s fairly consistent so you can usually rely on the letter \u2018i\u2019 to do the job i<\/strong>t was designed for. Just be aware of the exceptions and you\u2019ll be fine, as exceptions can be memorized.<\/p>\n
