How to Pronounce Put Foot Could Woman<\/h2>\n

Perhaps you already know how to pronounce pu<\/strong>t foo<\/strong>t cou<\/strong>ld wo<\/strong>man. We pronounce the vowel sound in all of the words above as \/\u028a\/. Whilst you may be familiar with the pronunciation of the word \u2018pu<\/strong>t\u2019, you must see that this very same word cou<\/strong>ld reasonably be pronounced \/p\u028ct\/. But it isn\u2019t. We have the word \u2018putt\u2019 for this, and that is an important word for you if you play golf. I don\u2019t want to give you a list of other words in which we pronounce the\u00a0\u00a0\u2018u\u2019 as \/\u028c\/ as I have already been over the \/\u028c\/ sound in my earlier post. So turning back to the \/\u028a\/ sound, you can see the letter \u2018u\u2019 pronounced with this sound in the words \u2018bu<\/strong>sh\u2019, \u2018bu<\/strong>ll\u2019 and \u2018cu<\/strong>shion\u2019. \/b\u028a\u0283\/\/b\u028al\/\/k\u028a\u0283\u0259n\/. Spelling And Regional Accents<\/h2>\n

Of course, this is received pronunciation. Although in southern England we pronounce \u2018cut\u2019, \u2018bun\u2019 and \u2018gun\u2019 as \/k\u028ct\/, \/b\u028cn\/ and \/g\u028cn\/, a lot of people, especially in northern England, wou<\/strong>ld use the \/\u028a\/ sound: \/k\u028at\/, \/b\u028an\/ and \/g\u028an. So don\u2019t be surprised to hear this.<\/p>\n

Watch out for exceptions!<\/h2>\n

Exceptionally, we sometimes pronounce the letter \u2018o\u2019 as \/\u028a\/. We have \u2018wo<\/strong>lf\u2019 and \u2018wo<\/strong>man\u2019. But this is not a common exception, so please learn these examples on their own.<\/p>\n

Aren\u2019t There Different Ways of Pronouncing \u2018oo\u2019?<\/h2>\n

The \u2018oo\u2019 can make different sounds and you can find plenty of words ending with \/k\/, \/t\/ and \/d\/ making the \/\u028a\/ sound. But this is not always the case. So other than the words in the infographic, you can learn common words like \u2018coo<\/strong>k\u2019, \u2018goo<\/strong>d\u2019, \u2018hoo<\/strong>d\u2019, \u2018woo<\/strong>d\u2019 and \u2018understoo<\/strong>d\u2019 [\/k\u028ak\/,\/g\u028ad\/,\/h\u028ad\/,\/w\u028ad\/,\/\u028cnd\u0259st\u028ad\/] for now.<\/p>\n

It’s All Conditional<\/h2>\n

Finally, we have the conditional words \u2018cou<\/strong>ld\u2019, \u2018wou<\/strong>ld\u2019, and \u2018shou<\/strong>ld\u2019, all very useful words which every English pronunciation teacher hears their students say incorrectly all the time<\/a>. The problem does not, however, tend to be the \/\u028a\/ sound, but the letter \u2018l\u2019. In these words there is no \/l\/ sound as the letter ‘l’ is silent. So we pronounce these words \/k\u028ad\/, \/w\u028ad\/ and \/\u0283\u028ad\/.<\/p>\n
