ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION: IMPROVE YOUR COMMUNICATION WITH AND ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION TEACHER
English pronunciation is one of the most useful skills you can learn when seeking to improve communication. Without developing this skill you might find that conversations between native English speakers are difficult to follow, or that people will struggle to understand you. This can lower your confidence and stifle your progress, so you need to learn English pronunciation. As an English pronunciation teacher, by teaching you some of the key elements of British English pronunciation, I can help you find your voice.
BRITISH ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION
Phonetics
British English is made up of individual sounds that you may not be used to hearing. Which is why you might find it difficult to form our vowels and mistake words like ‘chip’ for ‘cheap’. Or not know how to manipulate your lips and tongue in the right way to make the sounds for words such as ‘through’. Attempting to make these sounds can often seem impossible, but with an understanding of how they are formed you can overcome these hurdles. This is the study of phonetics – how individual sounds come together to make words. I can teach you how to make these sounds consistently, whilst giving you an insight into the music of the English language.
Stress and Intonation
You may have noticed that native English speakers pronounce certain sounds within words stronger than others. The way in which we apply stress affects the rise and fall of words within a sentence. Intonation is the way we raise and lower our tone according to the meaning behind our words. This comes naturally to native speakers but can appear subtle to others. I can help you analyse speech so you can identify these stresses and understand how intonation affects meaning. This gives you a greater feel for the rhythm of the language and greater confidence in day-to-day conversation.
Connected Speech
Native English speakers often put words together so that many words sound like one word whilst other words disappear altogether. This can make us difficult to understand. I can teach you how to identify common patterns and key words, which make understanding connected speech a lot easier.
PRONUNCIATION COURSES IN LONDON
As you might imagine, learning English pronunciation involves understanding the importance the role our body plays when speaking – how our voices are affected by our posture and breathing – and how to control different parts of our mouth. Activities that teach pronunciation also need to take into account when and where we speak.
I structure activities around presentations, discussions and interviews and teach grammatical structures, phrasal verbs and idiomatic expressions. I also find that students enjoy incorporating what they learn into current affairs, arts, science, economics and other topics they’re interested in.
